CASTING FOR GOLD – END OF YEAR GATHERING

December 2006 newsletter

So, 2006 has been and has pretty well gone and we celebrated it with the last meet up …two days dramatic pike fishing. The weather was surprisingly kind when you consider the horrors that the weather forecasters had predicted. In fact, we saw plenty of sunshine and some pretty decent temperatures – all of which the pike evidently enjoyed.

It’s got to be said that the smaller fish weren’t much in evidence and so numbers were down on what we’d often expect. However, this can often be a good thing, indicating that the really big fish are on the prowl. And so it proved. Six pike of twenty pounds or above were eventually landed with at least three or four throwing big hooks. Most disappointingly of all, was Neil’s lost giant – a fish he estimated in the mid thirty pound bracket. What a way that would have been to top the year. But of course, stories of lost monsters are what fishing trips are all about. It’s the lure of the unknown, the power of myths and legends that drag you up at five o’clock on a wintry morning and force you out there.

For the record, a few fish were caught on dead baits, some fish on fly and just about the majority on lures, generally single-hooked plastic fish representations. As usual, it was all about mobility, exploring the banks and keeping on the move both mentally and physically.

Everybody at Casting for Gold would like to thank, from the bottom of our collective hearts, our friends who fished with us. You’ve made it a great, great year for us with so many highlights it’s impossible to count. Big fish. Beautiful waters. Huge laughs. The firmest of friendships. How can fishing ever get better than this?

Thanks all again, then, for a great 2006 and if it’s possible we’re hoping for an even more action-packed 2007. Keep casting with Casting for Gold.
